Dryers and Their Multitude of options

By Jonathan David
May 1, 2020
When I was a child I remember my father giving our dogs a bath in the bathtub at home, or in the summer months, using the hose in the backyard. He would towel dry them as best he could after the bath, and then they would run around the house and rub on the carpeting and furniture to dry themselves—much to my mother’s dismay. They would eventually dry and their hair would look scruffy and wavy, but they were clean and that was good enough for my dad.

There weren’t many pet groomers in our area at that time, and professional pet grooming wasn’t a booming industry in those days. but a lot has changed since then. Nowadays, the pet grooming industry has evolved into a respected professional career path that many pet owners understand is a necessary part of dog ownership—and the equipment available to us has made our lives and our work easier and better.

Companies have developed equipment that helps us to turn a scruffy, shaggy pet into an eye-catching and adorable member of the family that they proudly include in many family activities. one of those pieces of equipment that have changed the way we groom pets are blow dryers—and there are a variety of them on the market. but why are there so many different kinds of blow dryers and are they really any different?

The answer to that question has everything to do with the pets that we groom. With such a variety of coat textures, lengths, thicknesses and styles, we as professional pet groomers need blow dryers that will give us different results to achieve the best overall grooming on our furry clients.

There are dryers that use high velocity, forced air to dry the coats and dryers that use gentle, continuous air flow, and there are some that have speed and heat settings as well. There are stand dryers, force dryers, cage dryers and handheld dryers, and they each have their purpose and intended method of use.

Force Dryers

Let’s start with high velocity dryers, or force dryers, as they’re commonly called. This type of dryer uses a motor to generate a very powerful and concentrated stream of air that is forced through a hose that the groomer holds in their hand. The groomer can choose different nozzles to affix to the end of the hose to either concentrate the airflow through a narrow opening, or through a wider opening to give a more diffused stream of air. These dryers are typically built in a canister style or a box style that sits on the floor or a shelf, or can be attached to the wall.

Force dryers are often used as a first step in the blow drying process to remove much of the moisture being held within the coat by using the powerful stream of air to blow the water away from the skin and coat. They’re also an excellent tool for loosening and removing packed undercoat, and an asset for removing mats by using the finer, more pointed nozzle to help separate the hair and push the undercoat or tangles outward, making it easier to brush out the coat and save you from having to clip down a matted pet.

Force dryers are rather noisy and can frighten some pets, so choosing one that has speed settings is ideal so you can start on a lower speed and work your way up to a faster speed as the pet becomes comfortable with the noise and feeling. Caution needs to be exercised when using this type of dryer around sensitive areas like the rectum, the ears and the eyes, and should never be pointed directly into those areas. using a slower speed setting and a cotton ball in the ear, or using your hands to shield the direct pressure of the air in those areas, can also help calm a pet and make the experience a more pleasant one.

Stand Dryers

A stand dryer is a type of blow dryer that is used to fluff and stretch the coat to get the hair as straight as possible. These blow dryers are fixed upon a base and pole that stand next to the groomer, or suspended from an arm attached to the wall, and they use a motor to create a more gentle flow of air that a groomer points in the direction of the hair they are drying. It gives the groomer a hands-free flow of air so they can dry the coat while simultaneously using a brush to fluff and straighten the coat.

This type of blow dryer is typically used as a second step after the force dryer, but can also be used as the only type of dryer after using a towel to draw the majority of the moisture out of the coat. The action of brushing while drying with a stand dryer is the best option when you’re trying to achieve the straightest and most voluminous coat, which in turn will allow you to achieve the best and smoothest finish on your cuts.

Stand dryers also typically offer multiple speed and temperature settings so you can change the setting when necessary, such as lowering the heat when you get near the more sensitive areas like the eyes. They’re also an excellent dryer choice when trying to brush out tangled or matted hair because the airflow separnull

Health risks of Anti-Bacterial Soaps

With fears of H1N1 running rampant, it seems like everywhere you turn, there’s antibacterial gel, antibacterial soap and other antibacterial cleansers.  but are these cleansers really necessary, not to mention safe, or do they actually post health risks?  Today’s guest post addresses these questions.

Guest post by Woody McMahon, Sequoia health and Fitness, Inc.

In an effort to fulfill the age old saying “cleanliness is next to Godliness,” the use of antibacterial soaps is on the rise. The liberal use of soap is a good thing, but antibacterial soaps present several major risks.

As early as 2005, researchers at Virginia tech found that the active chemical ingredient in antibacterial soaps, triclosan, can cause two major health problems. First, consumers who use the soaps may be exposed to significant quantities of the cancer causing substance chloroform. Also, long term use of these soaps creates an unhealthy balance of antibiotic resistant bacteria on the skin. They found bacteria resistant to some of the more popular antibiotic drugs like chloramphenicol, ampicillin, tetracycline and ciprofloxacin.

Dr. Peter Vikesland, an environmental chemist at Virginia tech had this to say about antibacterial soaps: “This is the first work that we know of that suggests that consumer products, such as antimicrobial soap, can produce significant quantities of chloroform. There are numerous potential exposure pathways that can be envisioned, such as inhalation and skin exposure, when using antimicrobial soaps to wash dishes or when taking a shower. There is also risk of exposure when using triclosan laden moisturizers as they may also react with chlorine in the water.”

What is Triclosan?

Triclosan is a synthetic antimicrobial agent found in a wide variety of products. Its broad spectrum, bacteria fighting ability has made it popular in an ever increasing number of personal care products, cosmetics, antimicrobial creams, acne treatments, lotions, hand soaps, and dish soaps. Triclosan goes under the trade name Microban®, when used in plastics and clothing and Biofresh® when used in acrylic fibers. even though Triclosan is effective at killing bacteria, it is registered as a pesticide with the united states environmental protection agency (EPA). Pesticides are chemicals designed to kill some type of life form. The EPA considers triclosan a high risk for human health and the environment.

What is Chloroform?

When triclosan, the active ingredient in antibacterial soaps, reacts with the chlorine in the tap water, chloroform is created. Chloroform is a central nervous system depressant and cancer causing compound. The U.S. department of Labor has strict guidelines when it comes to contact with chloroform. Chronic inhalation of chloroform may cause psychiatric and neurological symptoms, including depression, hallucinations and moodiness. In one study, liver enlargement was demonstrated in 17 of 68 workers exposed to chloroform at low levels for 1 to 4 years. Alcoholics are more at risk from chloroform because ethanol increases chloroform’s toxic effects.

Healthy Bacteria

The bacteria on your skin serve as a part of your skin’s natural defense mechanism. Your skin uses healthy bacteria to keep colonies of unhealthy bacteria at bay. Without the healthy bacteria, the unhealthy ones can take over and create infections and other skin problems. destroy all the healthy bacteria with antibacterial soap and you set yourself up for big problems. The constant use of antibacterial soaps is similar to using antibiotics for every little cold or sneeze. All antibacterial products should be used sparingly so that resistant strains of bacteria do not develop. using antibiotics only when necessary ensures they will remain effective when the need arises.

Antibiotic resistant Bacteria

When bacteria are exposed to long term, low doses of antibiotics, some of them can develop antibiotic resistance. resistant bacteria must be treated with other, sometimes stronger antibiotics. In rare instances, there is no known medication that will kill the bacteria. It is wiser to use antibiotics sparingly and for shorter duration. The constant use of antimicrobials, as in the antibacterial soaps, creates a real long term health hazard; one that is easily avoidable with regular soap.

Kidney Disease: Appreciating Today Without losing hope

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to PinterestPinterestPinterestShare to MoreAddThisMore5

I just completed reading an fascinating story in The Washington Times about a guy who climbed the 103 floors of Chicago’s Willis Tower (previously understands as The Sears Tower) with a “Bionic” ideal leg. Replacement body parts are just one more example of the miracles that contemporary medicine has been performing recently. Eradicating lots of diseases, replacing limbs, as well as even the prospect of living permanently are being debated among a few of the world’s brightest minds.

Many stories of fiction explain people who are indestructible as well as the current fascination with vampires likewise touches on our curiosity as well as rate of interest in a life that goes on indefinitely. It is rather fantastic exactly how fiction originating from a innovative creativity has transformed into truth in lots of areas such as transportation, communication, as well as just recently a lot more than ever in the fields of science, computers, as well as medicine. With all the medical discoveries that have occurred over the past few decades as well as with the speed of those discoveries, the prospect of someday getting rid of death by illness no longer seems out of reach.

As the pathways of a specific illness are found as well as the genes accountable for the susceptibility to health problem are isolated, a lot of illness that we understand today will ideally be someday examined in institution textbooks as historical info of a time long gone.

Almost all illness happen since of a genetic deformity or susceptibility as well as we are on the verge of being able to change the genetic makeup, do repairs, as well as whatever else is needed to get rid of their causes. The problem may develop nevertheless in illnesses that seem to be triggered by trauma or by the passing of time itself. Time does cause aging as well as scientists have found that even aging is triggered or accelerated by susceptibility in specific genes. So although aging may be slowed or arrested, the impacts of time on specific parts of the body that do not regenerate, like the kidneys, cannot be reversed.  In an evident effort to respond to this last holdout, scientists are working on methods to grow new healthy organs to replace ones that are damaged or old. up until this science matures however, the kidneys stay extremely prone to damage as well as their inability to self-repair makes them especially vulnerable.

Having kidneys that work is an necessary component to a long as well as delighted life. Kidneys play a central function in stopping dehydration, regulating the fluids throughout the body, regulating the electrolytes such as potassium as well as sodium, preserving acid-base balance, filtration of squander as well as detoxification, production of necessary elements that are accountable for the development of red blood cells, as well as a range of other functions that are needed for survival. considering that for the most part our family pets age at a quicker rate than we do, chronic kidney failure is one of the most typical triggers of health problem in both dogs as well as cats. Unlike Acute kidney failure which occurs suddenly, chronic kidney failure normally occurs over a number of months as well as is normally not reversible.

Some triggers of kidney failure include advanced age, inherited abnormality, parasites, medications, inflammation, autoimmune diseases, trauma, infections, poisons, as well as something triggering an obstruction of the typical urine flow. The typical age of diagnosis of chronic kidney failure is seven years for dogs as well as nine years for cats. specific feline breeds such as the Abyssinians as well as Persians seem to be at higher risk. pet dog breeds believed to be at danger include Shih Tzus, Cairn Terriers, Bull Terriers, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds, as well as Samoyeds. Cats are much a lot more prone to establishing chronic kidney failure than dogs are.

Although a lot of triggers of kidney failure are out of our control, there are things we can do for prevention in a few of the cases. the most crucial thing in our manage that can assist stop acute kidney failure is making sure our family pets do not get into antifreeze, rodent poisons, poisonous plants, as well as medications such as acetaminophen, neomycin, as well as others that have prospective to damage the nephrons (functional units of the kidney). one more thing that can be done is to get a veterinary checkup promptly if a urethral obstruction or kidney stone is suspected. Blockage of urine if not treated immediately as well as appropriately can cause kidney failure.

Symptoms of kidney failure are normally tough to notice at very first up until a big part of the kidney function has been lost. a few of these symptoms include boosted or adecrease in urination, boost in drinking, weakness, poor breath, weight loss, diarrhea, anorexia, lack of coordination, depression, as well as potentially observed blood in the urine. other symptoms may or may not be present so a appropriate diagnosis need to be made by a veterinarian. depending upon the values of lab tests your veterinarian may classify the illness into different stages – stage I with stage IV – with the higher number indicating a a lot more serious disease.

Depending on the specific complication being treated, different medications may be utilized to assist the pet’s possibilities of survival. For example hypertension is often treated with amlodipine as well as enalapril, anemia may be treated with erythropoietin, loss of appetite is commonly treated with cyproheptadine, as well as gastritis may be treated with famotidine, ranitidine, or cimetidine. other issues such as low levels of potassium may be treated with potassium gluconate (Tumil-K). Your veterinarian may likewise suggest therapy that includes specific water soluble vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids (Super Pure Omega 3), as well as a number of dietary changes. A diet plan that reduces the work that the kidney has to do while minimizing toxic buildup of protein byproducts are normally diets that are already low in protein, phosphates, as well as sodium. Prevention of dehydration is likewise very crucial as well as if oral fluids are not sufficient your veterinarian may suggest other methods of introducing fluids such as subcutaneously.

Azodyl is a fairly new nutritional supplement for cats as well as dogs that reduces specific compounds that impair the kidneys’ capability to filter as well as get rid of waste. This product naturally supports kidney function by assisting stop additionally kidney damage because of uremic toxin buildup. often relief can be felt in as bit as 48 hours. Azodyl need to be shipped overnight on ice as well as kept in the refrigerator in buy for it not to lose potency. A 1800PetMeds pharmacist is offered to response any type of concerns you have about Azodyl or any type of other medication that you may have.

Kidney illness need to be appropriately diagnosed as well as chronic illness is normally handled in a different way than acute disease. Acute kidney failure is normally triggered by toxins or a limitation of blood supply to the tissue (ischemia). often supplying supportive care such as IV fluids during the acute failure enables the kidneys to compensate as well as in the situations of ingestion of poison for example, a possibility for the poison to be excreted as well as in a few of these situations the pet may really improve. In acute failure when the pet passes the acute phase it is possible for healing to really occur. In situations of chronic kidney failure nevertheless the condition is normally progressive as well as the kidney function will only decrease over time. Although other choices such as transplants as well as dialysis may likewise be available, they are only done in a few places as well as are extremely costly. often all we can truly do is hope as well as pray that a option comes by method of treatment to all those who experience from incurable illness such as this. up until a remedy is discovered nevertheless all we can do as pet owners is supply the appropriate support as well as comply with the currently accepted treatment suggestions of the veterinarian.

Although chronic kidney failure is not currently treatable as well as a lot more times than not euthanasia may unfortunately ended up being unavoidable, we can definitely do our finest to boost the pet’s high quality of life, appreciate every moment that we spend together, as well as provide our family pets a great dose of like each day.

Diarrhea and Vomiting in pets

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to PinterestPinterestPinterestShare to MoreAddThisMore6

Diarrhea and vomiting in pets can have many causes. Especially in young pets, dietary indiscretion/food allergies and intestinal parasites, including roundworms, hookworms and whipworms may cause digestive upset. Particularly in young, stressed animals at pet stores or kennels, coccidia are also common intestinal parasites diagnosed. foreign body ingestion is always a concern, especially in young and inquisitive pets. Metabolic diseases of the liver, pancreas, kidneys and intestines may also cause diarrhea and/or vomiting. Inflammatory bowel disease is probably the most common cause of chronic vomiting and/or diarrhea in adult pets.  finally especially in older pets, and those suffering from weight loss and/or loss of appetite, cancer must also be ruled out in many cases.

For pets with acute diarrhea and vomiting, over the counter remedies including Pepcid AC or Immodium may be helpful. Slippery elm and probiotics and enzymes such as fast balance G.I. and NatureVet Digestive Enzymes are typically useful in many cases. Many pets with acute digestive upset will benefit from brief 12 to 24 hour periods of fasting, after which a bland hamburger and rice or turkey and sweet potato home-cooked diet can be introduced for a few days until symptoms pass. Any pet with chronic or severe diarrhea or vomiting should have a complete veterinary exam and medical workup to assess for underlying causes and for the best treatment plan.

Dogs choose Petting to Vocal Praise

Dogs choose Petting to Vocal Praise

Last updated on April 8, 2015 By Puppy Leaks 15 comments
Get over right here as well as pet me! That may be precisely what Fido’s believing when you keep oohing as well as aahing over him from afar.

x

It’s no surprise that dogs like to be pet. What is unexpected is that they seem to show no preference towards a person providing them vocal praise as well as a person who ignores them.

Researchers at the university of Florida evaluated whether dogs would choose to be petted or provided vocal praise, both from their owners as well as strangers. turns out dogs like being pet, no matter whose doing the petting.

Shut up as well as pet me!
The very first part of the trial included 42 shelter as well as pet dogs as they interacted one each time with people in a lab room. One person would pet the dog, one would provide verbal praise, as well as one would have no interaction whatsoever with the dog. These interactions were recorded over eight three-minute intervals.

The second phase of the trial included 72 shelter dogs as well as pet dogs that were individually put in a space with just one person; a complete stranger for the shelter dogs as well as the owner for the pet dogs. once again they were evaluated in eight three-minute intervals with the private alternating between petting, praising, as well as no interaction at all.

The researchers discovered that the dogs showed much more rate of interest in the person petting them regardless of whether they were familiar or not. What they did discover unexpected was that the dogs showed no preference over the person providing verbal as well as the person having no interaction whatsoever with the dog. even when no alternate was offered the dogs showed no preference towards the person providing verbal praise.

Why Do Dogs like Petting So Much?
A previous research study discovered that there’s a cardiovascular impact on dogs when they’re being pet. We’ve understood that dogs have a soothing impact on humans for some time. Petting a canine has been discovered to decrease tension as well as lower blood pressure. Researchers are now looking into the physiological impacts petting has on the dog. There’s been signs that it has soothing impacts on them as well.

There’s One thing Dogs like much more Than Being Pet
The exact same researchers who wrapped up that dogs choose petting over verbal praise have dealt with dogs before. Previous research study has suggested that both petting as well as food have reinforcing impacts on canine behavior, they both support social habits towards humans. In a previous research study they discovered that dogs choose food to petting.

Dogs were evaluated in five minute intervals. In session one the dogs were provided both food as well as petting in constantly contingent on the canine staying near the person offering it. In the next three sessions they thinned out the food supply up until it was lastly depleted. The fifth session reverted back to a full food supply.

The dogs were evaluated in a familiar as well as unfamiliar environment, as well as the person alternated between the dogs owner as well as a stranger. In general the dogs showed a preference to the food over petting. When the food supply was being depleted the dogs were costs less time with the person offering it. as for the petting there were differences depending upon the dogs familiarity with the person.

Dogs choose Petting much more Than previously Thought
“You’re such a great dog” may not be what your canine wishes to hear, it seems to have bit effect. She’d truly appreciate a good petting though.

It’s not going to keep me from speaking to my dog, I spend a great amount of time speaking to my dog. She seems like she enjoys it, perhaps even discovers some value in my words. Some people may believe it’s crazy however I believe a great deal of canine owners would agree; we spend a great amount of time speaking to them.

I’ll just make sure I pet her more; or much better yet provide her some good homemade treats now as well as then.

Dogs choose petting to vocal praise, however I’m still going to speak with my dog.

Animal Empath award – February 2010

The mindful feline as well as Stacia Kelly at  Mind-Body-Spirit Works have produced the animal Empath Award.  The award is provided to individuals who have dedicated their lives to making the world a much better location for animals.  It will be awarded when a month by Mind-Body-Spirit Works and The mindful Cat.  If you understand one of these special human beings deserving of this award, please send a nomination e-mail to Stacia Kelly or Ingrid King for consideration.

Thanks to Stacia for producing the terrific badge for the award, featuring none other than Buckley!

Our very first award goes to Cindy Ingram.

Cindy Ingram is the creator of Casey’s House, a personal rescue group in Bluemont, VA, that focuses on older as well as difficult to embrace cats.  Cindy has a special location in my heart since she rescued my valuable bit Buckley, the subject of Buckley’s story – lessons from a Feline Master Teacher, from a farm in southwestern Virginia, where she as well as about twenty other cats were kept in marginal living conditions.

Casey’s home is named after Cindy’s cherished tabby cat, who pertained to online with her when she was fifteen years old.  At very first Cindy refused her entrance to her house, as she already had two cats as well as two dogs at the time. Casey, however, was not a feline to take no for an answer. Casey’s “home” at the time was a colony of some fifty cats, as well as she was most likely getting worn out of either not getting to her food on time, or eating off of unclean dishes.  Every evening, Casey would be waiting on Cindy’s  porch, undoubtedly hungry, so Cindy would feed her. Slowly, however surely, Casey ended up being a part of Cindy’s family.  Eventually, four of her feline colony buddies pertained to join Casey.  states Cindy:  “Casey taught me to reach beyond my self-imposed limits, as well as her home is the dream that now has ended up being a reality”.

In addition to supplying a risk-free haven for older cats, Casey’s home likewise promotes Trap-Neuter-Return.  with this program, feral cats are humanely trapped, given a veterinarian to be evaluated, spayed or neutered, vaccinated as well as ear-tipped.  Cats that are friendly to humans as well as kitties are embraced into loving homes.  healthy feral cats are returned to their outside homes.  Casey’s home spayed as well as neutered a lot more than 200 cats in 2009, making a considerable contribution to controlling the overpopulation problem.

Cindy produced a terrific atmosphere for the cats.  There are extremely few cages, a lot of of the cats online in a big open room, full of carpeted ramps, feline climbing towers, as well as great deals of soft pillows as well as blankets for them to sleep on.  new rescues as well as those with prospective health and wellness conditions are kept in separate areas up until they’ve been taken a look at by a veterinarian.    What was truly incredible to me was exactly how tranquil the energy in that big space felt.  All the cats seemed to get along, there was no hissing, posturing, or fighting.  Cindy stated in all the years she’s done this work, she’s only had one occurrence with two cats fighting.  Casey’s home genuinely is a risk-free haven for cats in need.

Like all non-profit organizations, particularly those assisting animals, Casey’s home is having a hard time in these hard economic times.   If you have a preferred shelter or rescue group that you support, please think about making a donation to them – they requirement your assist now a lot more than ever.  as well as if you don’t already support a shelter, maybe you’ll think about making a donation to Casey’s home in Buckley’s memory.  Cindy as well as the cats at Casey’s home will say thanks to you.

I’m working on moving our 3 to a a lot more raw, organic diet plan too. Esp the indoor one….she neenullnull
