If you look carefully at lots of of my modeling pictures, you may have observed that I am commonly sitting on top of a special modeling stand.  however assumption what? It is really a furniture made just for cats! This is called “Mr. Herzher’s single Seat feline Perch.”  That’s a long name.

Here is what it appears like without any type of blanket or covering.  even though I have had this perch for years, PetMeds has started to bring them now, too.  This is good, since I do not desire to offer my own perch.

But I will tell you some things about it.  Like, it is roomy sufficient that even a long feline like Harley can in shape on it.  It is extremely sturdy, as well as my Mommeh was able to put it together all by herself.  I believe it is great to sleep off the ground, in situation there are ants or snails or dirt on the floor.

I like to add my sheepskin throw to make it even a lot more soft as well as cozy.  The excellent thing is that it is lightweight sufficient to step around to anywhere the very best sunspot is.

Harley, this perch is occupied!

I will provide this perch two paws up! What’s your preferred sleeping spot?

5 errors I’ve made that resulted in canine bites

I’ve been bitten by a number of dogs.

It’s not that I’m a poor canine handler, however I’ve dealt with a few thousand dogs, as well as when you work with dogs all day, sooner or later you’re going to get bitten.

I’ve worked as a canine walker as well as pet sitter as well as likewise at a boarding kennel, in addition to fostering dogs.

I believed I’d share a few of the errors I’ve made (there are method much more than 5), since it’s always a great concept for us “dog people” to stop as well as evaluation exactly how to behave around dogs.

Please share any type of errors you’ve made as well. If we can avoid even one canine bite, it will be worth it.

Mistakes I’ve made that led to canine bites

1. Knowingly pushing a dog’s limits.

This is where I’ve gotten in difficulty numerous times. I’m conscious of the dog’s prospective aggression, as well as I push the dog’s limits.

Unfortunately, we canine enthusiasts in some cases like to believe that “oh, dogs like me” or “oh, I understand dogs.” Well, yes, however if we understand dogs, then we requirement to respect them as well as keep in mind the truth that dogs can bite us, as well as they will.

For example, a good friend asked me to find over as well as provide treats to her fear-aggressive dog. All was going fine with this up until I chose “just to try” to pet the dog. Well, that was an extremely dumb as well as unfair idea, as well as I got what I deserved.

2. stepping as well close to a dog’s food bowl.

I was bitten in the ankle while stepping as well close to dog’s food bowl while she was eating.

This occurred at the boarding kennel I worked at. I’m the one who provided her the food in her pen, as well as then I must’ve stepped over the bowl while counting on leave.

I didn’t understand this canine extremely well, as well as she didn’t understand me. I should’ve understood to location her bowl away from where I’d be walking to get out of her pen.

You may recall one more time when I composed about getting unfairly close to a rescue dog’s food bowl.

See my post: exactly how to avoid a puppy’s food aggression.

3. getting up close as well as personal.

Thankfully, this hasn’t resulted in a canine biting me that I recall, however I’ve been growled at oh so numerous times for providing dogs hugs or just getting as well close to their risk-free location such as a kennel.

Once a canine growls at me, I feel extremely poor for my impolite behavior. Thankfully, the dogs have always had great communication skills as well as chose to caution me very first rather than bite.

Lesson: Be cautious about which dogs you hug or put your deal with close to. even if the canine understands you, he may not be comfortable with you putting your arms over him or around him. This is truly invasive habits on our part, as well as fortunately many dogs put up with it well.

4. putting as well much count on in others.

Sometimes I count on other canine people to make wise options around the dogs I’m handling, as well as this backfires.

For example, grown adults would in some cases reach out to pet my fear-aggressive foster canine without asking. He’s the white canine you see in the pics.

This resulted in a nip much more than once, as well as while nobody has any type of companies petting a canine without asking, I’m still accountable for the canine I’m handling.

5. rough play as well as dogs snatching toys or treats.

My canine Ace has nipped my hand unintentionally while trying to get his rope toy from me, however only after I’ve gotten him additional excited.

I’ve likewise put my hands in the mix between Ace as well as my parents’ canine Elsie while they were playing tug of war as well as I obviously chose to join.

What a dumb thing to do.

When dogs are thrilled as well as grabbing with their mouths, of program they can accidently bite our hands.

Seriously, I might go on as well as on with the errors I’ve made, however I’ll keep the listing to just five items. Please share your own examples if you have any. Or possibly things you’ve seen other people do.

Have you made any type of dumb errors around dogs?

What guidance do you have for others around dogs? let me understand in the comments.

There are numerous theories on the origins of Shih Tzu, what we know is that it was as a companion in China and the name is a reference to “little lion”.

On the other hand the Pitbull originates out of England, Ireland, and Scotland and used to be a part of the earlier civilizations in these regions.

The past aside, here are the physical features which the people who own this blend consider appealing:

Height 10-25 inches

Weight: 15-30 pounds

Colors: Variable between yellow, brown, black and chocolate brown. It’s based on the shade of the parents.

Face: often prefers the Shih Tzu

Fur: Soft and soft (because it is a result of Shih Tzu genes but not flowing and long because Pitbull has a short coat)

2. Pleasant Temperaments

Pitbulls are well-known for their love and loyalty for children. They are also enthusiastic and ready to do their best.

Bubba & company Fargo

An American pit bull terrier in Fargo has a business named after him.

Bubba & company of Fargo is there for all your pets. That includes the cat – and the bird, the snake and the rabbit.

It makes sense that pets of all kinds are welcome at Bubba & Co. Bubba himself is the type of dog who steals the show no matter where he is. This reddish-colored pitbull loves all people and dogs and is gentle with everyone.

“He’s a good spokesperson for the breed,” said his owner Lindsey Whisman.

And she is right.

I had the opportunity to walk Bubba and his sister Sophie last fall through my Fargo pet sitting and dog running business. Bubba and Sophie are playful, lovable pitbulls with very different personalities.

Sophie likes to play fetch, go for runs and play tug-of-war while Bubba takes his time on walks, steps around puddles and tries to catch bees. Both dogs were rescued from physically abusive pasts, but today they always seem to have big smiles on their faces.

Bubba & Co. is owned by Lori Whisman of Fargo and her family. Her daughter, Lindsey (Bubba’s owner), works at Bubba & Co.

The Fargo business is unique because it offers full grooming, self-serve dog washing, pet boarding and dog daycare all from one location. Cats and smaller animals are also welcome for daycare and boarding. products for sale include treats, grooming supplies, pet toys and more.

Bubba and Co. is located at 1345 university Dr. S. in Fargo where The natural Pet center used to be (The NPC is now at 3037 13th Ave. S.).

Popular pitbull

It makes sense that the Whisman family named the store after Bubba.

It’s easier for people to remember pets’ names, Lindsey said. That’s why she and her family believed Bubba would be a recognizable name for the store. Plus, before they’d decided on a business name, people kept coming in and asking “Where’s Bubba? Is Bubba here?”

So Bubba had to be included in the name.

Bubba and Co. opened on March 1, 2009 and caters to all kinds of animals. The Whismans wanted the business to be a place where people with multiple kinds of pets can bring their animals for grooming, daycare or boarding, Lindsey said.

The grooming prices at Bubba and Co. are reasonable. any breed of dog can get a bath in one of the self-serve tubs for under $20. A bath and haircut ranges from $32 to $42. and all services are discounted for families with multiple dogs.

After all, Bubba and Co. was designed for people who own several animals, Lindsey said. She, for example, has owned dogs, cats, birds, scorpions, fish, rats and a snake.

Giving back

Some Fargo pets found safety at Bubba and Co. when their owners’ homes were threatened or damaged by the Red River flooding at the end of March, Lindsey said.

When my mutt Ace and I stopped in for a visit, some pets were still staying at Bubba’s. housing pets with nowhere else to go was one way that Bubba and Co. helped the Fargo-Moorhead community.

Bubba and Co. also has a goal to offer free services to dog rescue groups in town, Lindsey said. some of the rescue dogs could benefit from a free grooming, for example.

When Ace and I visited Bubba and Co., the store was clean and open with large windows and staff ready to tend to our needs. A friendly Cocker spaniel and a Sheltie greeted us with barks when we walked in. A laid-back tabby cat followed us around, totally unfazed by the fact that I had a 65-pound mutt on a pinch collar.

Ace, too, was at ease and curious. He was not nervous like he sometimes is when I bring him to boarding kennels. He drooled on Lindsey, made pals with the cat and looked around wagging his tail. His calm manner proved this was a comfortable place for animals.

Stop by Bubba and Co. in Fargo with your pets and see for yourself. and don’t just bring your dog. “Bring the cat, too!”

Knuckling Over in Puppies

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to PinterestPinterestPinterestShare to MoreAddThisMore2

One of the more common presentations in sick puppies is when they present knuckling over, either while standing or when trying to walk. There are many possible causes of why puppies would knuckle over. Knuckling over is usually a sign of weakness, which is often secondary to metabolic factors and/or neurological factors. For example, puppies with low blood sugar are often quite weak and may knuckle over when attempting to walk. These puppies also may have little appetite, be very weak and may even present with tremors or even seizures.

Treatment of these puppies will center on slowly raising blood sugar, as well as treating the many possible underlying causes of low blood sugar. Puppies with brain and/or spinal lesions also may present with knuckling over. Certainly trauma, toxins, and various viruses all may affect the nervous system resulting in knuckling over.  Developmental abnormalities of the spinal vertebrae may lead to spinal compression and secondary knuckling over may be seen.  treatment will be determined by correcting these underlying causes, and prognosis will also vary, as long as these underlying causes are treatable.

Learning about Halloween Pet security with Loki

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to PinterestPinterestPinterestShare to MoreAddThisMore2

I don’t believe Loki will ever delight in Halloween as much as I do, no matter exactly how numerous times I carve a corgi pumpkin.

You see, Loki is extremely much “un-fond” of specific parts of Halloween.  In between my trying to keep her risk-free as well as her distaste for a custom or two, it’s just simpler for all of us (Loki included) if she as well as her giant, yellow, lab of a sibling spend the evening in our nice, peaceful bedroom.

What precisely does Loki not like about Halloween?  So delighted you asked!

1) Children in costume, particularly in rambunctious groups.  Animals don’t truly comprehend the idea of “dress-up” or the truth that behind that bloody, grotesque, over-sized murder mask is the good youngster next door who likes nothing much more than to method community animals in a calm, soothing, respectful manner.  All they understand is that looks different as well as OMG, IT’S COMING THIS method as well as trying TO get into THE HOUSE.  Loki is a lover, not a competitor so my concern is much more that she’d somehow bolt out the door rather than stand her ground as well as protect the house front, however because I don’t want to danger either, she just has to online without seeing who’s at the door for one night of the year.

2) Loki does NOT like being kept away from candy  and all it’s trappings.  We all understand exactly how poor chocolate can be for pets–deadly even, as well as a especially piggy canine or kitty can cause him or herself some major gastro-intestinal distress by chowing down on just about any type of type of human treat.  But those aren’t the only dangers.  Pets seldom take the time to unwrap treats before ingesting them as well as packaging can present choking as well as intestinal blockage hazards.  Plus, a few of that candy is STICKY, as well as having to cut cellophane out of Mr. Kitty’s fur will not be your preferred Halloween memory.

3) She doesn’t comprehend why designs don’t double as chew toys.  Between the corgi as well as the toddler, not much survives at ground level . . . or three feet higher (the young child can reach, as well as that corgi is long when she’s on her hind legs).  They have nothing much better to do than gaze up at the designs on the mantle, or the high shelves, or the wall, just waiting on something to fall.  Think of all the things Halloween designs are made of: foam, glass, metal, glitter, plastic, etc.  These are all things that certainly don’t belong in your dog’s mouth (or, eventually, in your dog).  I make sure any type of designs (including cords to illuminate pieces) are not only at least twice as high as Loki is long, however that they are stable as well as not going anywhere unless Texas is the sufferer of a freakishly strong earthquake.

Those are Loki’s three main beefs with the spookiest of holidays.  It’s a great concept to understand your pet’s as well, that method you can make sure it’s a night of treats instead of a night of fear (complete with either a go to to the regional pet er or a browse party).  Feel totally free to share any type of other Halloween security tips concerning our furry friends!

5 concerns With A German Shepherd owner

“5 concern Friday” is a new function on that Mutt where I interview authors, trainers, veterinarians, blog writers as well as others who work with dogs. It’s a method to share different opinions as well as experiences. If you would like to be featured, please email

KL is a longtime visitor of That Mutt who has a German shepherd dog. KL trains her canine in obedience as well as nose work for fun, as well as she is likewise a volunteer with a German Shepherd rescue.

Here were my 5 concerns for KL:

That Mutt: What are a few of the reasons why you chose to get a German shepherd?

KL: The typical reasons, brains, loyalty, beauty. My hubby traveled for work, as well as I desired a big canine with me. GSDs are tough as well as athletic as well as able to endure climate extremes as well as an active lifestyle.

But the most significant reason is the part of the breed basic that requires the canine to possess “a specific aloofness that does not lend itself to instant as well as indiscriminate friendships.”

They’re reserved as well as discerning; you will work for a deep connection with your German Shepherd, as well as I truly respect that.

To paraphrase Jane Austen, their great viewpoint is seldom bestowed as well as for that reason much more worth the earning. when you do, you have a buddy for life. There is just no other canine rather like them.

TM: What suggestions would you provide to a first-time shepherd owner?

KL: I might go into a number of posts’ worth of advice, however my huge ones would be:

a) Do your research. discover as much about the breed as you can. try to reach out to regional breed clubs or IPO (schutzhund) clubs if possible, get to understand some owners as well as breeders as well as observe some dogs. discover the pros as well as cons of the different line types as well as of the breed in general. This will take time, however it’s well worth it.

b) choose why you want the dog. The German Shepherd is a extremely flexible breed, as well as the result is different breeders concentrating on different things.

The many apparent example would be show lines vs working lines. Within a provided line type, you will discover breeders specializing in areas like IPO or herding or showing or browse as well as rescue.

If you can articulate what you want from your canine as well as interact that to your breeder or rescue, you stand a much much better possibility of getting the canine that’s best for you.

c) discover a good, resourceful fitness instructor who has experience with the breed. These are extremely intelligent, believing dogs, as well as that is both the very best thing as well as the most difficult thing about them!

A wise fitness instructor who is prepared to open up the toolbox as well as assist you tailor your method to your canine is worth her weight in gold.

TM: What guidance would you provide for anybody thinking about starting nose work training with their puppy or dog?

KL: There are a number of different governing bodies for nose work/scent work, however begin with the national association of Canine Scent work ( NACSW is an outstanding resource for information on the sport as well as exactly how to discover an trainer in your area.

I motivate anybody who is interested to look into it. It is a great method to bond with your dog, as well as you will discover a great deal about them.

And have fun!

My trainer reminds everybody before every trial or odor recognition test to have a great time since today is one more day to have fun with your dog.

TM: Does your canine sleep in your bed?

KL: She’s allowed, however she has staked her insurance claim on my huge leather chair, as well as many nights she can be discovered snoozing in that!

TM: Is there anything you’d like to state to That Mutt’s readers?

KL: have a fantastic weekend as well as pleased Thanksgiving! delight in a long time with your dogs!

Thank you, KL!

If anybody has any type of concerns for her about German shepherds, please leave them in the comments.

Half marathon

Last Wednesday morning I raced a half marathon just since I could.

There was no official race event. No official timing system. just me as well as my gps watch. I raced against my previous times as well as although I didn’t top them all, I managed to snag a third location beating all however two.

I turned 30 in April. This was not a huge offer to me, however it’s nice to understand I am getting stronger as well as faster “with age.” I am so much stronger now than I was 10 years ago, as well as it’s nice to understand my strongest years are yet to come.

You don’t see too many 18-year-olds winning marathons.

What are some of your best race times, of any type of distance?

My best half marathon time is 1:47:05. Can any type of of you dog runners beat me? (I bet you can).
