The 2012 fall runway did away with spring and summer’s creamy pastels and invited darker, moodier colors into the spotlight. One of fall’s hottest color combinations is black and blue, a cool duo that’s as chic as it is edgy and as sophisticated as it is feminine.

As someone with a self-professed nail polish addiction, it only made sense to fuse the two colors (plus nude) together on one nail. You can use any three colors depending on your mood and preferences, or stick to the three colors I’ve used here.
I like to keep things inexpensive, so I opted for Sinful Colors professional Nail Polish in Why Not (a darker robin’s-egg blue), Rimmel London Lasting finish Pro Polish in black and Finger Paints Don’t Make a Scene (nude).
To complete this manicure, you’ll need three nail polishes of your choice, a base and top coat and striping tape. As an alternative to striping tape, which I found on eBay ($1 for 10 rolls), use trimmed Scotch tape.

Step 1:
After your base coat dries, paint all your nails the lightest of the three colors. If necessary, apply two or three coats and wait for your nails to dry completely. I like to wait at least one hour just to play it safe.
Step 2:
Apply striping tape. You can follow the designs I did, repeat the same design on each nail or make your own.
Step 3:
Fill in an area on each nail with your second color.
Step 4:
Fill in a second area on each nail with your third and final color. Wait for your nails to dry completely.
Step 5:
Remove tape and then apply your top coat. clean up the area around the nail cuticles. I chose to fill in the nude spaces between the two colors (which appeared on a few nails), but you can leave yours as-is for a cool effect.
